Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab
Emirates, who died 2 November 2024, was born around 1918 in Abu Dhabi, the youngest son of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1922 to 1926, and grandson of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Ruler from 1855-1909. At the time of his birth, Abu Dhabi was one of several emirates in the southern Arabian Gulf in treaty relations with Britain and known as the Trucial States. Its economy was based primarily on fishing and pearl diving along the coast and offshore and on simple agriculture in scattered oases inland, with part of the population being nomadic.
